CHSAA announces new way teams will qualify for post-season
KUSA — The Colorado High School Athletics Association announced yesterday that the post-season qualifications for team sports will change to a Rating Percentage Index. Therefore, teams’ qualification to enter the post season is based on winning percentages; a team’s winning percent, their opponents’ and their opponents’ opponents.
Each team will have an RPI that is the sum of 25 percent of their winning percentage, 50 percent of their opponents winning percentage, and 25 percent of their opponents’ opponents winning percentage.
The board said that they were looking for a consistent and transparent way for teams to be fairly ranked and selected when entering the post-season, said CHSAANow.com.
Each sport is open to add additional contingencies to playoff qualifications; for example, football has elected to guarantee a team’s playoff position if they are league champions. Also, each sport committee may also take into account a coaches’ poll conducted each week and/or determine if games have different weighting criteria for home, away and neutral games.
CHSAA is continuing to work on how games between teams in different classifications will affect the RPI rating.
