Maybe the Highland Scots should take a page from the SEC and start scheduling patsies for their non-conference games.

Last season, they opened with Loudonville, Mount Vernon and River Valley and lost all three, two of them on the road, before rebounding to finish 5-5. Loudonville went deep into the playoffs and the other two just missed qualifying for the post season.

This season, things don’t get any easier. Loudonville and River Valley are both back on the early schedule, with Heath sandwiched in between. At least the first two games are at home.

“We play a tough non-conference schedule,” said coach Chad Carpenter, in his 14th year at the helm, “and conference play should be very competitive as many of the schools have a lot of returning players.”

The Scots, too, have more starters back than not on both sides of the ball after going 5-2 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Blue Division and scoring over 40 points three times. Only playoff participants Fredericktown and Centerburg finished ahead of them in the division, handing them their only losses in league play.

Highland hopes to pick up where it left off last season with thumpings of Cardington (48-12) and Mount Gilead (41-27).

“Team speed will be a strength,” Carpenter said. “Many of the players received playing time last year and should be able to contribute toward our success this season.”

Leading the returnees is running back Jarod Limings, coming off a season in which he rushed for 776 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. His sidekick will be Andrew Stillwell, with Max Schreiber at quarterback.

The receiving corps is headed by Dylan Tuggle, Alex Wright, Kaden Buntin and Garrett Mentzer, while opening holes up front will be Jacob Ware, Jacob Christman, Steve Hylton and Jordan Alexander.

Defensively, Christman, Ware and Alexander will be joined on the line by Zack Baker. Key starters in the back seven will be linebackers Andrew Davis and Austyn Albanese, with Wright and Stillwell joined in the backfield by Logan Veley.

In all, the Scots have seven returning starters on offense and six on defense. Thirteen lettermen dot the roster.

“The lack of depth at many positions is always a concern,” Carpenter said. “We could have some new faces this year seeing some playing time for the first time.”
