Hillsboro High School’s Donovan Donaldson signed a basketball scholarship with Cumberland University on Thursday.
Donaldson averaged 12 points and four assists per contest for Hillsboro in 2014-15, helping lead the 24-9 Burros to District 12-AAA and Region 6-AAA titles, along with a Class AAA quarterfinal appearance.
“They’re getting a guy who can score the basketball,” Hillsboro coach Rodney Thweatt said. “He’s ultra-athletic and just has a tremendous love for the game. I’ve never seen a kid spend so many hours in the gym as Donovan. It was those countless hours and his love for the game that got him to this point.”
Donaldson’s scoring was only a fraction of what the 5-foot-11 guard brought to the court, though.
“He didn’t come out of the game from the first round of the district (tournament) all the way to state,” Thweatt said. “Not one minute, and he handled the ball for us 98 percent of the time. His assist-to-turnover ratio was great during that stretch, he shot the ball well and just led the team. He’s just a great leader.”
