Jackson Memorial – ranked seventh in the APP Top 10 Poll – played host to Toms River North – ranked 10th – on Friday and defeated the Mariners 3-1 in a Class A South battle at Jersey Shore Arena.
After a scoreless first period of play, Davin Van de Zilver stepped up from his defensive post to put Jackson Memorial (8-1-2, 5-0-1) on top 1-0 at 6:24 of the second, before Jaguars captain Austin Boyle delivered his ninth goal of the year, a power play tally assisted by Justin Mayer and Van de Zilver, that extended the lead to two goals at 9:09.
Toms River North (6-5-1, 2-4-0) cut the lead in half when Colton Shan scored his ninth goal of the season off a primary assist by Nick Pica at 8:54 of the third period, but a Tanner Gracyzk tally at 7:20 put the game out of reach.
Josh Lindo turned out another solid performance stopping 20 of 21 shots to earn the victory, while his counterpart Julian Coto made 32 saves.
With the victory Jackson Memorial reclaimed first place in the Class A South from Brick Township, but has a tough divisional road ahead, as the Jaguars are scheduled to face the Mariners again on January 12, before hosting Southern Regional on January 16, and Toms River East on January 19.
HOWELL 9, MANALAPAN 2: Howell’s senior captain Kyle Hallbauer scored three goals and assisted on three more as the Rebels (10-2-0, 5-2-0) topped the Braves (5-6-0, 2-4-0) in this Class A North game.
Jack Kosinski delivered his sixth and seventh goals of the year while Greg Bernhardt, Anthony Gallicchio, Zack Mazik, and Nick Mauro rounded out the Rebels scoring.
Manalapan’s John Fanizza scored both Manalapan goals and now has six on the year.
With his performance, Hallabauer now has 31 points for the season with 18 goals and 13 assists.
MIDD. NORTH 8, MARLBORO 0: Middletown North’s Tom Terranova scored two goals and assisted on three more while freshman Justin Skelly recorded the first two goals of his varsity career as the Lions (6-3-3, 5-2-0) blanked the Mustangs in this Class A North game.
Vinny Tomassetti had a five-point night with a goal and four assists, while Kevin Stager and Kevin Felice rounded out the Lions scoring.
With his outing Terranova now leads the Lions in scoring with 29 points on 13 goals and 16 assists.
Mike Corella made 12 saves to record the shutout while Marlboro’s James Whitman stopped 22 shots.
CBA 7, FREEHOLD TWP. 0: CBA junior James Timko recorded a hat trick as the Colts (11-1-0, 8-0-0) defeated the Patriots (5-5-1, 3-4-0) in this Class A North game.
Cristian Winters scored his 15th goal of the year to extended his team-leading goal count, while Austin Tieri, Anthony Cucich, and freshman Ryan Tierney rounded out the Colts scoring.
Bjorn Kvaale distributed three assists in the victory while Brett Farrell earned the shutout with 22 saves.
Though the score may not indicate it, Freehold Township held CBA – ranked first in the APP Top 10 Poll – to a two-goal lead through two periods.
RB CATHOLIC 4, MONTCLAIR KIMBERLY 3: After suffering an upper body injury that forced him out of the Red Bank Catholic lineup for a month, junior Evan Hoey saw his first action since December 10 and scored the game-winning goal with less than minute to play on Friday as the Caseys (7-4-1) topped Montclair Kimberly in this non-divisional game.
Alec Mintz scored his 10th and 11th goals of the year, while Cole Kirchner delivered his second of the season.
Brandon Rozzi turned away 27 of the 30 shots to earn the victory.
