HOLMDEL – The Hornets of Holmdel came away with an impressive 34-3 victory against Pinelands Regional for their first win of the season on Homecoming night Friday.
Holmdel (1-5) made a statement right away as they found the end zone on their third play from scrimmage. Junior quarterback Aneesh Agrawal completed a 48 yard pass to senior wide receiver William Van Name to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead. On their next drive, Agrawal converted on fourth-and-five by rushing for 23 yards which set up a two yard touchdown run by senior Matthew Nuzzi to extend the advantage to 13-0.
Pinelands (0-7) got on the board in the second quarter as AJ Long kicked a 27-yard field goal, but Holmdel responded with another touchdown, this one a two yard run by senior Adnan Bashir to make it 20-3, which was the score into halftime.
The Hornets came out in the second half and pleased the crowed with a little trickery. Senior wide receiver Steven Wailer carried the ball on a double reverse and ran untouched 36 yards into the end zone to make it 27-3. Holmdel found the end zone one more time in the fourth quarter as Agrawal hooked up with Wailer through the air for a 26 yard score and make the score 34-3.
“We preached the same thing we preach week in and week out,” Holmdel head coach Greg LaCava said after the game. “If you execute and win your one-on-one battles, don’t turn the ball over, bend but don’t break and worry about the next play and not the previous play, you have an opportunity to be successful.”
LaCava was given the game ball by his son for his first win as Holmdel’s head coach, which he then dedicated to his team.
Key play: The 36 yard double reverse touchdown run by Wailer out of the gates in the second half to make it 27-3 and pretty much put the game away.
Offensive game ball: Agrawal put on a show by displaying both his arm and his legs. The junior threw for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 60 yards.
Defensive game ball: Nuzzi shined on both sides of the ball, as he was all over the field making numerous key plays on defense.
Up next: Holmdel will next play on Friday night at Red Bank Regional. Pinelands Regional will return home to take on Manchester Township on Friday as they resume Class B South division play.
