A pair of programs that ended lengthy Southern Tier Athletic Conference basketball championship droughts last February will take their next steps toward, they hope, retaining those titles Wednesday night.
Horseheads’ girls and Norwich’s boys target back-to-back championships as postseason play gets under way.
Horseheads visits Seton Catholic Central in one girls’ semifinal beginning at 7 p.m., with Binghamton visiting Norwich in the other scheduled to tip off at 6.
On the boys’ side, Norwich plays host to Horseheads at 7:45, and by that time may know the outcome of the other semi pitting Binghamton against Johnson City. That one is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on the Wildcats’ court.
The finals will take place Friday night at Union-Endicott, starting times for those to be determined.
A winter ago, Norwich’s boys captured their first conference title in 20 years by rolling past Union-Endicott 85-67 in a contest that was deadlocked nearly midway into third-quarter play. The Purple Tornado recently absorbed its lone STAC loss of the season — and first to a Section 4 Class B opponent in three seasons — 58-52 at Oneonta.
Horseheads’ girls claimed their first STAC championship since joining the conference for the 1999-2000 season with a 33-point victory over Owego last season, and matched that margin in Section 4’s Class AA final.
Should a Horseheads vs. Binghamton girls’ final be in the cards, it would make for a matchup of teams that split their regular-season games, the home team winning by 17 and 23 points, respectively.
