Hough opens 2015 with victory over Hopewell

CORNELIUS, N.C. — After Mother Nature interfered with the beginning of spring sports, the Hough Huskies started 2015 with a 6-2 victory over Hopewell on Monday.

Hough’s offense was reliable all day long, scoring in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, putting Hopewell in an early hole. Hough seniors Casey Brescia and Leah Murray each had a team-high 2 hits each, with Murray collecting the game’s only triple. Brooke Stamey was just 1-3 from the plate, but made the most of her one hit by bringing home two Hough runners with a bases-clearing double.

Senior Hannah Jones put in a yeoman’s effort pitching for the Huskies, going five solid innings. She allowed 2 runs on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts. Junior Katrina Cassel closed out the game with two scoreless innings. Cassel struck out 4 of 8 batters she faced while surrendering 2 hits.
