LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Sarah Linerode’s bases-clearing hit gave Hough just enough Thursday, as the Huskies held on for a thrilling 5-4 victory over North Lincoln.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hough appeared to be cruising to victory. North Lincoln found a way to tie the game at 3 apiece. Leah Murray got the Hough offense going in the top of the ninth inning with a bunt single. Two batters later, Hannah Jones stepped to the plate and ripped a double to left-center. After North Lincoln intentionally walked Casey Brescia, Sarah Linerode drove one to right field, bringing two runs home for the Huskies.
North Lincoln found themselves needing another two-out rally, and the Knights almost found a way to force a 10th inning. Katrina Cassel closed a complete game with a groundout to give Hough the 5-4 victory. Cassel struck out 8 batters and surrendered just 2 earned runs in 9 innings. Hannah Jones went 4-5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI for Hough.
