Not only was it the first win of the season for the Poughkeepsie High School baseball team, it was its first win playing in Section 9.
The Pioneers beat Rhinebeck, 3-0, on Wednesday at home. It pleased Poughkeepsie coach Mark Bianco to see his team pick up a win in its first game of the season.
“I can’t remember the last time we started 1-0,” Bianco said. “For our first game, it was a great win for us. Defensively we played well and we were aggressive with the bats.”
Mark Weaver was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. He knocked in one run in the first inning and another in the fifth.
Corey Simmons started for the Pioneers and tossed four shutout innings. Simmons scattered four hits, struck out five batters and walked two. He also showed the ability to pitch out of danger, Bianco said.
“Corey got into three jams in the first three innings,” Bianco said of his winning pitcher. “He pitched himself into them and pitched himself out.”
Weaver relieved Simmons on the mound after the fourth, and struck out six hitters in the three innings he pitched. He allowed one walk and one hit.
Chris Cassens threw five innings for Rhinebeck and Ryan Euell tossed two. Rhinebeck visits Dover at 4:15 p.m. April 9.
The Pioneers visit Spackenkill at 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
