HUMBOLDT — Jacob Taylor threw for two touchdowns and the Peabody Golden Tide defense stopped the Vikings all night as Peabody defeated Humboldt 35-0.
“We know we have good players defensively,” Peabody head coach Shane Jacobs said. “We knew we hadn’t played up to our potential. We felt good about this week and really focused on fundamentals, which I think it showed tonight.”
After making a defensive stop on Humboldt’s first drive, Peabody got on the board quickly, scoring its first touchdown with 8:26 left in the first quarter on a six-yard touchdown pass from Taylor that hit off the hands of Hayden Baugus, but Keyvon Goodwin came down with it in the end zone.
The Peabody defense forced the Vikings into a three-and-out, and the Golden Tide drove down the field, scoring this time on a 35-yard pass from Taylor to a wide open Baugus for the 14-0 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the quarter.
“Jacob [Taylor] played really well tonight,” said Jacobs. “He executed the offense well and did a good job leading the team.”
Taylor started in place of Kendrick Malone, who did not make the trip with the team.
The Golden Tide got the ball back just before the end of the first quarter, starting a four-minute drive that was capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by Brandon Johnson with 8:50 left in the second quarter.
Johnson scored on the first play of Peabody’s next possession, outrunning the Humboldt defense for 33 yards to make the score 28-0, 5:42 before halftime.
“Brandon [Johnson] is one of the underrated backs in West Tennessee,” said Jacobs. “He played well tonight and is going to have the opportunity to show how good he is.”
Johnson was not done, scoring his third touchdown of the night on his longest run of the game on a 63-yard touchdown run with 1:57 left in the third quarter to give Peabody the 35-0 lead, which was the final score.
Peabody improves to 3-1 (1-1) on the season while Humboldt drops to 1-3 (0-2). The Golden Tide returns home to play Greenfield, while the Vikings will travel to Gleason next week.
