Hunter Higdon was a critical part of Jackson Christian’s transition from the 2014 Class A state baseball championship to a successful 2015 season.
Higdon stepped into the No. 1 pitching spot and consistently provided hits to aid the Eagles’ offense.
A couple weeks ago he decided to commit to Tennessee Tech for the chance to play NCAA Division I baseball on the next level.
As a junior, Higdon was named to the All-West Tennessee First Team after a successful year on the mound and at shortstop.
Former North Side star signs deal in Australia
Casey Prather, a former North Side and Florida standout, singed a one-year deal to play professional basketball in Australia.
Prather will be joining the Perth Wildcats. Last season, he played in the NBA D-League for the Bakersfield Jam.
In his senior season at Florida, Prather averaged 13.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in helping the Gators to the Final Four.
Three Jackson baseball players commit to Harding University
Two University School of Jackson and a Jackson Christian baseball player made their commitment to play college ball at Harding University over the summer.
From USJ, Garrett Guymon and Ben Brauss both committed to Harding University, as well as Jackson Christian’s Miles Humphreys.
All three are rising seniors and helped lead their respective teams to a state championship as a sophomore.
Guymon batted .346 with 34 RBI and 10 doubles to be named to the All-West Tennessee Second Team. Brauss was named an All-West Tennessee Honorable Mention.
Last year, he batted .364 with 35 runs, 27 RBI and 12 doubles to be named to the All-West Tennessee Second Team.
Westview’s Sams has 5 offers
Westview rising senior Garrett Sams has gotten five offers so far this summer – Maine, Air Force, Austin Peay, Southeast Louisiana and Union.
Sams was named The Jackson Sun’s Boys’ Basketball Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore and was named to the All-West Tennessee Second Team as a junior.
Last year, Sams averaged 16 points, four rebounds and 2.8 assists.
Middleton graduate Antonia Whatley signed her letter of intent on Tuesday to play college basketball at Johnson University.
Whatley was one of four seniors on this year’s Lady Tiger team that won the Class A state championship.
For the first time, four different colleges in West Tennessee will be hosting high school volleyball playdays in the coming weeks.
The longest running playday is the one co-hosted by South Side and Freed-Hardeman. That playday will be held on Aug. 8.
Playdays hosted by Union, Bethel and UT Martin will all be played a week later on Aug. 15 – two days before the start of the season.
