The Horseheads girls tennis team remained unbeaten after a three-set win by the first doubles team of Shilpa Sadhasivam and Mackenzie Hyde provided the 4-3 victory margin over host Maine Endwell in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match on Monday.
Sadhasivam and Hyde defeated Megan Hull and Michelle Savoldy, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 for the Blue Raiders only doubles victory. Meredith Braiman, Tatum Benesh and Rachel Stermer won singles matches for Horseheads, who improved to 11-0. Maine Endwell improved on a 6-1 loss earlier in the season against Horseheads by giving them their closest match to date.
Elmira Notre Dame 10, Tioga 0: The unbeaten Crusaders scored 56 seconds into play and cruised to an IAC victory over the 7-2 Tigers.
Alec Cutler headed in a crossing pass from Mitchell Vargas to make it 1-0. Cutler finished with two goals and two assists. Rocco Coulibaly added two goals and three assists and Aidan Sharma also finished with two goals for Notre Dame (10-0). The Crusaders, who host Waverly on Senior Night on Wednesday, moved up to third in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C poll on Monday. Notre Dame has outscored their opponents 96-2.
Binghamton 2, Horseheads 1: At Horseheads, John Enright scored the Blue Raiders sole goal in a STAC loss. Tyler Morehouse made nine saves for Horseheads (4-5), who held advantages in shots (13-11) and corners 5-1) over the Patriots (3-6).
Odessa-Montour 2, Newfield 1: At Odessa-Montour, Collin Povaski scored both goals for the Indians in an IAC win. Povaski’s winning goal came off a Curtis Harris assist with 4:26 remaining in the game. The Indians outshot Newfield, 9-4.
Thomas A. Edison 3, Newfield 0: At Edison, freshman Bella Willsey had seven aces and nine points to lead the Spartans to an IAC win. Junior Ashley Comstock had a team-high four kills for Edison (7-2).
Watkins Glen 3, Waverly 0: At Waverly, Amanda Pike had 13 kills, three blocks and six digs to lead the Seneca’s to an IAC win. Watkins Glen’s scores were 25-14, 27-25 and 25-16. Nateah Cornish added six aces, two kills, nine digs and 13 points for the Seneca’s. Waverly (3-5) was led by Hannah Place, who had seven kills and nine digs while Hannah Place had a team-high 10 digs.
Vestal 200, Elmira 210: At Links at Hiawatha Landing, Elmira’s Casey Woodard shot a two over-par 38 to grab medalist honors in a close match with 10-1 Vestal. Jacob Barnes added a 40, Tim Manning a 41, Caleb Hyek a 43 and Colson Cadwalder a 48 for the Express, who shot the lowest score this year by a Vestal opponent at The Links at Hiawatha Landing.
Corning 210, Binghamton 227: At Corning Country Club, the Alex Hepburn and Chris Trifoso both carded rounds of four over-par 39s to take medalist honors in a STAC win for the Hawks, who improved to 10-1.
Elmira Notre Dame 4, Chenango Valley 3: At Notre Dame, the Crusaders took three of four singles and onje doubles match all in straight sets for an IAC win. Alivia Clark, Madeleine Meier and Maris Malanoski won in singles and Yvie Molingou/Ilana Sobel captured a doubles win for Notre Dame.
