Freshman Olivia Grover scored 17 points Thursday night to help the Odessa-Montour girls basketball team continue its strong start to the season with a 46-34 victory on the road against Interscholastic Athletic Conference foe Spencer-Van Etten.
Gillian Clark added 12 points for the Indians, who at 5-1 are three victories from matching last season’s win total. Sage Garrison contributed eight points. The Indians outscored S-VE 12-6 in the final quarter.
Darria Rorick led Spencer-Van Etten (2-2) with 12 points.
Lawson to compete at nationals: Corning-Painted Post High School junior Jessica Lawson will be among 40 girls competing Saturday at the 37th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego.
The girls race begins at 12:15 p.m. Eastern time and will be followed at 1 by the boys race. Both will be shown live at www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMrvwG4Iy1g.
Lawson won the girls race at the New York State Federation Championships for the second time in three seasons Nov. 21 at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls following a runner-up finish in the Class A race at the state public schools meet at Monroe-Woodbury High School. She finished second at the Foot Locker Northeast qualifier Nov. 28 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
Last year Lawson ran at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon and finished 26th after placing 27th at the Foot Locker National Championships in 2013.
Newark Valley 54, Watkins Glen 36: Dylan Bradley (120), Jake Johnson (126), Brandon Gould (132), Ian Chedzoy (182), Kurtis Edwards (195) and Kameryn Shelton (220) had pins for Watkins Glen in an IAC loss at Newark Valley.
Odessa-Montour 55, Dryden 34: Billy Tague, James Terry and Tony Humphries each had two individual victories for Odessa-Montour in an IAC triumph against visiting Dryden.
Tague won the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.73) and 200 freestyle (2:05.70). Terry was first in the 100 freestyle (1:01.61) and 100 backstroke (1:18.33). Humphries won the 200 individual medley (2:26.01) and 500 freestyle (6:19.88).
Corning 4, Horseheads 1: Anthony Evans rolled a 626 series as Corning improved to 3-0 with a Southern Tier Athletic Conference win over Horseheads at Rossi Lanes.
Horseheads 5, Corning 0: Beth Sawyer bowled a 600 to help Horseheads improve to 2-0 with a STAC win over Corning at Rossi Lanes.
