SOUTH BURLINGTON – Josh Lorrian tossed in 18 of his game-high 19 points as Vergennes broke free of South Burlington for a 68-57 win in high school boys basketball on Wednesday night.
The Rebels (0-1) led 21-16 after a quarter and the teams were tied 27-27 at the break.
Adam Gill matched Lorrian with 19 points, while Hunter O’Connor (12) and Brent Woods (10) also tallied in double figures for the Commodores (1-0).
Ben Moran paced South Burlington with 14 points. Harrison Gregoire added 12 and Jeremy Clements netted 11.
•Enosbug 50, Missisquoi 41: Matt Perley pumped in 15 points after halftime to lead host Enosburg past Missisquoi.
Caleb Laroche put up a dozen points and Jye Larivee added 10 for the Hornets (1-0), who led 25-17 at halftime.
Nick Poissant netted a team-high 10 points for the Thunderbirds (0-1).
•Twinfield 64, Cabot 24: Eli Wilson had 15 points to lead three Twinfield players in double figures in a win over host Cabot.
Matt Codling tallied 12 points and Isaiah Brownam chipped in with 10 for the Trojans (1-0), who were up 31-13 at halftime.
Jeremy Maxfield powered the Huskies (0-1) with 10 points, going 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
• South Burlington 6, Spaulding 3: Brendan Lahue opened the high school boys hockey season with a hat trick to help South Burlington to a win over host Spaulding.
Nate Scandore, Elias Fleischman and Michael Flaherty each added a goal for the Rebels (1-0), while Travis Gay stopped 18 shots.
Denver Heath, Ryan Allen and Logan Copeland each found the back of the net once for the Crimson Tide (0-1). Justin Laperle made 26 saves.
•Stanstead (Que.) 5, North Country 2: Derby Line resident Jacob Ducharme popped in two goals and added an assist to lead host Stanstead to a win over North Country.
Ducharme is one of three Vermonters skating for Stanstead alongside BJ Roy and Ian Bissonnette.
Dawson Cote (assist) and and Alex Giroux found the back of the net for the Falcons (0-1) and Dana Marsh stopped 29 shots.
• Burr and Burton 8, Brattleboro 4: Aggie Bisselle erupted for four goals and two assists as Burr and Burton skated past visiting Brattleboro to open the season.
Chloe McDonald chipped in with two goals, while Charleigh Carthy and Natalia Sowolewska each tallied once for the Bulldogs (1-0). Molly Dingley had 20 saves.
Axis Baisley netted a hat trick for the Colonels (0-1) and Emily Martyn dished out three assists. Keegan Jameson made 16 stops.
• Northfield 2, Missisquoi 1: Brianna Doty scored late in the third period to lift Northfield to a comeback win over host Missisquoi.
Catherine Miles tallied in the second period for the Maruaders (1-0) to tie the game at 1, before Doty won it in the final frame. Analiese Morvan stopped six shots to earn the win.
Olivia Thayer had the goal for the Thunderbirds (0-1) and Hannah Bockus made 32 saves to nearly steal the win.
•Woodstock 10, North Country 0: Hannah Coates had two goals and two assists to lead eight scorers for Woodstock in a rout of host North Country.
Miranda Johnson also struck twice for the Wasps (1-0), who got a combined 15 saves from Annabelle Lessard and Bridgit Black.
