HS Roundup: Watkins boys, Waverly girls play for titles

By

The Waverly girls and Watkins Glen boys will each play Whitney Point for Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large School basketball titles Thursday night at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden.

The night begins at 6 p.m. with the girls contest. This will be the third consecutive appearance in the championship game for Waverly, which was a 49-31 winner over Lansing in 2013 before losing 55-50 to the Bobcats last year.

Waverly (16-2) is ranked 11th in Class B by the New York State Sportswriters Association and was a 47-46 winner over Whitney Point (12-5) to close the regular season Friday.

Watkins Glen’s boys team will try to knock off an unbeaten team for the second time in just over a week after the Senecas handed Newfield a 49-35 loss on Feb. 10 at home. Watkins Glen (14-1) is ranked ninth in the state in Class C and Whitney Point (17-0) is ninth in Class B.

Two years ago Watkins Glen and Whitney Point played for the IAC Large School title and the Senecas prevailed, 68-66.

The IAC Small School finals are Friday at TC3. Moravia and Newfield meet in both games, starting at 6 p.m. with the girls contest.
