IAC Large School champs to be crowned Thursday at TC3

Champions will be crowned in Interscholastic Athletic Conference basketball on Thursday night in Dryden, as the Large School girls and boys title games are scheduled to be played at the Tompkins Cortland Community College gym.

The action will begin with the girls’ game at 6 p.m., featuring North Division champion Whitney Point (12-5 overall, 9-2 division) against South winner Waverly (16-2, 13-0). That game will be followed at 8 by the boys’ title game between Whitney Point (17-0, 10-0) and Watkins Glen (14-1, 12-1) in a battle of top-10 teams in the state in their respective classes. Tickets are $5 per game.

The defending champion Wolverines, in the Large final for a third straight year, are the only IAC girls’ team to be ranked in the state; they come in at No. 11 in the most recent Class B poll. Among its victories is a season-opening defeat of Southern Tier Athletic Conference school Johnson City (51-49) and a 60-51 victory over Small School finalist Newfield on Dec. 23 in Waverly.

The Wolverines defeated Lansing for the Large School crown two seasons ago, and fell to the Bobcats, 55-50, in last year’s final.

Whitney Point last played on Feb. 6, a 71-52 victory over Trumansburg in which Bri Sturdevant scored a game-high 23 points, 11 of them in the final quarter including three of her seven 3-pointers. Two of the Golden Eagles’ losses came against state-ranked non-league opponents Cooperstown (No. 3 in Class C) and Bainbridge-Guilford (No. 16 in Class C).

On the boys’ side, Waverly (16-2) is ranked 11th in Class B by the New York State Sportswriters Association and was a 47-46 winner over Whitney Point (12-5) to close the regular season Friday.

Watkins Glen’s boys team will try to knock off an unbeaten team for the second time in just over a week after the Senecas handed visiting Newfield a 49-35 Senior Night loss on Feb. 10. Watkins Glen (14-1) is ranked ninth in the state in Class C and Whitney Point (17-0) is ninth in Class B.

Two years ago Watkins Glen and Whitney Point played for the IAC Large School title and the Senecas prevailed, 68-66.

The IAC Small School finals are Friday at TC3. Moravia and Newfield meet in both games, starting at 6 p.m. with the girls’ contest.
