CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The first major winter storm of the season arrived early Monday, causing postponements of area high school basketball tournaments.
With freezing rain falling in the foothills, most conferences chose to push events back to Tuesday afternoon. The Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, which includes schools in Boone, Morganton, and Hickory, pushed their games back to Wednesday late Monday evening. The South Mountain Athletic Conference, including schools in Shelby and Kings Mountain, also pushed games back to Wednesday due to inclement weather.
In Charlotte, CMS’ decision to cancel school on Tuesday also pushed back the start of conference tournaments to Wednesday. That’s assuming the ice has melted and it’s deemed safe enough for travel to schools. The North Piedmont Conference tournament was pushed back to Wednesday as well.
As of 11:00 am, all conference tournaments in the Charlotte area have been postponed to Wednesday through Friday.
