Stout defense and two second-half touchdown passes rallied the Ida Baker Bulldogs to a 17-6 win Friday night at Riverdale High School.
The Bulldogs (2-3) held the Raiders (2-3) in check after an early touchdown to snap a two-game losing streak.
“I thought it was a great team win,” Ida Baker coach Brian Conn said. “It wasn’t always pretty but the defense made some big plays, some turnovers, and kept them out of the end zone.”
Jordan Diggs and Rasheed Golden hooked up on two second-half touchdown passes to lift the Bulldogs to the win. Golden raced 63 yards with a Diggs pass to put Ida Baker ahead in the third quarter, then caught a 15-yarder in the fourth period to give the Bulldogs a double-digit lead.
That second score provided some cushion late in the game when the Raiders made a last-ditch effort to get back into the contest. Jacob Tracey hauled in a Daniel Ulmer pass for 35 yards for a first and goal in the final two minutes, but Baker held on downs at the 5.
Riverdale hurt itself with six fumbles, losing three.
“We’ve got to stop shooting ourselves in the foot,” Raiders coach Damon Jones said. “We can’t sustain drives. We need guys to make plays and they’re not making them.”
Ulmer’s 15-yard quarterback keeper early in the second quarter gave Riverdale a 6-0 lead.
The Riverdale defense came up big twice in the second quarter. The Raiders stopped Baker at the 1-yard line. When the Bulldogs recovered a fumble two plays later at the 14, Riverdale limited Ida Baker to David Montoya’s 28-yard field goal.
Montoya missed a 43-yard kick on the last play of the half.
Both teams get back into district play next week, with Ida Baker home against Cape Coral in District 6A-10 and Riverdale traveling to Golden Gate in District 7A-12.
