The five-star basketball camp has been a hoops institution for decades, to the point that stars who have already retired were once feted prospects at the event. That means that they had to face off against each other in an all-star camp setting, and Duke power forward Christian Laettner and Georgetown counterpart Alonzo Mourning were no different.
The photo you see above showcases Mourning and Laettner facing off against each other in a post drill. The pair were both campers at the same time and used each other as a barometer of their growth, both in terms of physique and skills.
Laettner confirmed as much on Twitter during the 30 for 30 documentary I Hate Christian Laettner, which aired on ESPN.
That continued in college, all the way up to the 1992 Draft, where Mourning was selected one spot in front of Laettner, despite the Duke star’s more impressive collegiate track record.
Yet, on that day at the 5-star camp, they were still just two blazing stars whose celestial orbits happened to briefly intertwine.
