After nearly two months out of action, Marco Gonzales is set to return to the mound in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
The left-handed Gonzales hasn’t pitched since May 19 due to irritation in his throwing shoulder.
He’s scheduled to pitch Friday with the Palm Beach Cardinals, the Single-A affiliate of St. Louis. He’ll be limited to 35 to 40 pitches in that outing as he rebuilds arm strength, general manager John Mozeliak told reporters Monday.
Gonzales was the winning pitcher in four consecutive Class 5A state-title games for Rocky Mountain High School from 2007-10 and is the Cardinals’ top-ranked pitching prospect.
The Cardinals hope Gonzales will be ready for Triple-A or MLB action by July 25. He’s expected to be ready to throw 100 pitches by the end of the month.
Gonzales has made six starts and thrown 28 1/3 innings this season, all for the Memphis Redbirds in Triple A. He’s 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA, 22 strikeouts and eight walks.
