Indiana high school wrestling finals start Friday


New Albany’s Hunter Castleberry, Charlestown’s Bryant Haynes and Providence’s Matt Hayes will compete for state championships during the Indiana High School Athletic Association wrestling finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The finals are set for Friday and Saturday. Each weight class will feature 16 competitors, and wrestlers must win their first-round matches on Friday to advance to the finals and consolation rounds.

The three area seniors all have difficult matches. Castleberry (39-7 and ranked No.19) will face Perry Meridian senior Brandon James (41-0 and ranked No.1 in the state at 138 pounds by in the first round. Haynes (43-5 and ranked No.15) will battle Merrillville junior Jacob Covaciu (40-1 and ranked No.1 at 145), and Hayes (38-3 and ranked No.17) will face Elkhart Memorial sophomore David Eli (38-3 and ranked No.16 at 182).

Other qualifiers from Southern Indiana include Columbus East freshman Graham Rooks (45-1 and the semistate champion at 106), Madison’s Chayce Young (47-4 at 126) and the Jennings County contingent of semistate champion Andrew Herrin (50-2 at 145), Christian Redmond (44-8 at 195) and Brendan Sutton (41-10 at 285).
