Coach Jan Mitchell brought small track squads from Iona Prep (18 boys) and Ursuline (10 girls) to this weekend’s Mount Carmel Invitational in San Diego, California.
But Saturday, both teams came up big.
Ursuline’s Nora Donahue, Siobhan Schenk, Keira Tibia and Anna Flynn combined to win the girls 3,200 relay in 9:32.82 before finishing second in the distance medley relay (12:21.42).
Iona Prep’seniors Ryan Herrera-Murphy and Matt Fay finished 1-2 in the pole vault at 15 feet, 8 inches and 15-2, respectively. Herrera-Murphy’s vault was his best ever outdoors.
Teammate Andrew Cannistraci shattered his personal best mark in the discus by a whopping 12 feet, finishing third with a 149-8 throw.
