ELMA, N.Y.-They have been battery mates at Iroquois for the past three seasons of varsity softball. Jamie Ward is the catcher and Amanda Metz the pitcher. They are best friends and that helps contribute to their chemistry together.
Ward told Two On Your Side’s Stu Boyar “We just know each other so well that we basically can read each other’s minds.” Metz told Stu “There’s certain times where I really want to throw this pitch and I’m like I’ll call her off if I don’t want it. By the time she calls the pitch its the exact one I’m thinking of.”
This is their last go round as teammates. The pitcher catcher combination will be broken up next year. Ward will catch for Mercyhurst and Metz will pitch for Edinboro. That means they will play against each other. Ward said “Its definitely going to be tough. She knows what my weaknesses are so I’m really going to have to work.” Keeping a straight face might be a challenge for Metz.”I think the hardest part if I’m pitching to her is going to be keeping a straight face. Its going to be so hard because I’m so used to her being my catcher. I’ve been pitching to her for so long I’m going to have to think about what to throw to her, how to keep a straight face, its going to be funny I think.”
For now Ward and Metz are hoping to take Iroquois to a New York State championship. That would be the perfect ending to their time as battery mates.
