After bowling two straight strikes, Island Coast’s Wyatt Smith rolled his final shot down the lane, turned around and put one finger in the air.
The thud of the pins signaled another strike and the end of Fort Myers’ bid to repeat as district champs.
The Gator boys enacted a bit of revenge from last year’s final, knocking off the Green Wave 3-1 in the District 6 final Tuesday at Cape Coral Bowland. Meanwhile the Island Coast girls maintained their dominance in the district with a 3-2 finals win over South Fort Myers.
The boys will make their third appearance at the FHSAA state bowling championships Nov. 4 and 5 at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando under coach Brian Jones and while the girls made it five straight.
“It was a complete team victory,” Jones said. “We have a lot of interchangeable parts. Our philosophy is if one person can’t do that job, the next person can. They pick each other up.”
Teams played in a double-elimination format best-of-5 series while competition went by the Baker Format, in which each team has five players bowl two frames, to decide which teams go to state.
Fort Myers was on the brink of elimination in a semifinal, down 2-1 trailing Ida Baker in the 10th frame of Game 4. That’s when Jeremy Wagner struck out to win the game. The Green Wave manufactured a victory in the deciding game to get to the final.
“We were definitely looking for the repeat,” Fort Myers coach Scott Guttery said. “You’re always looking for the gold (district championship) trophy rather than that silver one. But our guys are just happy to be going to state. It’s always a fun trip and we hope to see (Island Coast) up there.”
Island Coast’s Tyler Plourde (673) and Kyndall Snyder (561) won the Lee County Athletic Conference individual titles in the morning.
Ida Baker’s Tyler Altmann and Cypress Lake’s Corbett Raker also qualified for state on the boys side while North Fort Myers’ Loren Bellentoni and Fort Myers’ Cam Boland made it through from the girls competition.
