The Ankeny Centennial wrestling team was looking to avenge an earlier loss during a Class 3-A regional dual on Wednesday.
Instead, the Jaguars suffered a 39-18 loss to Western Dubuque (Epworth) in the opening round at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. They finished the season with a 13-12 dual record.
“We went there knowing that everybody had to perform certain jobs that we had talked about during the week,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth, whose team had dropped a 32-30 decision to Western Dubuque at the Linn-Mar Duals on Jan. 10. “Then we opened up and didn’t perform those jobs right out of the gate, and we kind of dug ourselves a hole.
“We didn’t have the firepower to get out of it,” he added.
Western Dubuque won seven of the first nine matches to build a 33-6 lead. Centennial then got back-to-back decisions from Trey Rouse at 120 pounds and Zach Owens at 126, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the loss.
The Jaguars’ only fall of the night came in the final match at 145. Alec Helmkamp pinned Jackson Healey in just 19 seconds.
Centennial’s other victories were provided by fifth-ranked John Ware at 182 and eighth-ranked Collin Olson at 285. Ware posted a 7-4 decision over Alex Wernimont, while Olson outlasted Alex Costello, 2-1.
Western Dubuque recorded four falls, including one by second-ranked Max Lyon at 170. Mitch McAndrew opened the meet with a fall over Grant Nehring in 29 seconds at 152.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson then defeated Western Dubuque, 46-15, to advance to the state duals tournament.
