Come Thursday the notoriously raucous crowd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn will either be cheering or booing the Minnesota Timberwolves’ decision to roll with either Duke’s Jahlil Okafor or Kentucky’s Karl-Anthony Towns with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
Both Towns (second team) and Okafor (first team) were part of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA team in 2014; Okafor was the ALL-USA Player of the Year.
The general consensus is that they’ll go No. 1 and No. 2, the pick held by the Los Angeles Lakers.
Still, quite literally, the million dollar question is: Who’s going No. 1?
We caught up with a handful of elite high school players who have played against Okafor and Towns and had them play Timberwolves general manager, asking them the following question:
Between Okafor and Towns, here’s who I’d take with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft…
Jayson Tatum, St. Louis Eagles (Mo.), 2016
“Jahlil! He’s the most skilled player in the draft and he’s got great footwork! I hope he goes No. 2 though so he can play for the Lakers!”
Sacha Killeya-Jones, Team Felton (S.C.), 2016
“Karl-Anthony Towns. I think he’s got the more complete game over Jahlil right now. Jahlil is way more dominant offensively and he’s a force in the paint, but his defense isn’t on the same level as Karl and I think he’s way more versatile too.”
Kobi Jordan-Simmons, Atlanta Celtics (Ga.), 2016
“Karl-Anthony Towns. I think he’s more versatile and I think he’d bring more energy to the team all around.”
Troy Brown Jr., Las Vegas Prospects, 2017
Towns, as of now because of his size and ability to play a complete game and get up and down the floor in transition.”
Rawle Alkins, NY Rens, 2016
“Karl-Anthony Towns, because he’s got the ability to stretch the floor and shoot threes.”
Jeremiah Tilmon, St. Louis Eagles (Mo.), 2017
“Jahlil, he’s the best. Nobody can stop him and he dominates either way he goes.”
