Quarterback Zarron Hanney accounted for three touchdowns and Adarius Wesley two TDs in Jeff Davis’ 40-14 season-opening win over LeFlore on Friday.
At Hornet Stadium, the Vols were able to overcome first-half miscues and take a 19-0 halftime lead. Jeff Davis continued the domination in the second half, scoring 21 more points.
Vols coach Lee Carter said this was a revenge game.
“We went down to Mobile last year and was up 21-6,” Carter said. “We beat ourselves.”
JD’s first score came with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Austin Ballard connected with quarterback Zarron Hanney from the 5-yard line. The PAT was blocked by Leflore.
JD’s first possession of the second quarter was highlighted by a 64-yard run by Travez Bozeman. The drive was capped when Hanney connected with Adarius Wesley in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.
Travis Bell scored on a 1-yard run, and the PAT made the score 19-0 Jeff Davis with 3:19 remaining in the first half.
Jeff Davis added three touchdowns in the second half. A quarterback sneak by Hanney, a 22-yard scamper up the middle by T’ummie Sankey and a 62-yard run by Wesley for his second TD of the night.
“Coach came in and said everybody just be discipline, do what you’ve been told,” Sankey said. “Everybody did that, and we came out with a win. That hard work we do at practice paid off on the field.”
Bozeman had two interceptions on the night.
“He starts offense, and plays defense,” Carter said. “He’s my do it all guy.”
