BIRMINGHAM — Jeff Davis put on its state championship party hat, too.

The Vols, despite missing eight free throws in the final minute, held on to beat McGill-Toolen 55-54 for the Class 7A championship Saturday.

Jasmine Walker finished with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting to lead JD, while Sydney Horne added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Walker missed four free throws in the final 7 seconds with the Vols nursing a one-point lead.

McGill-Toolen suffered a turnover in the backcourt after Walker’s misses with 7.0 left. Walker returned to the line and missed two more with 1.7 to go.

The Yellow Jackets’ desperation attempt didn’t reach midcourt.

Lauren McKee drained a 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds left to pull McGill within one.

MCKee and Shelby Hall scored 13 points each for the Yellow Jackets. Shauntai Battle added 12 and Ryann Sylvester 10.

The Vols, behind the 6-foot-3 Walker, grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 25 second-chance points.
