The more we think about this statistic, the more amazing it becomes.
For the first time since 1996, John Curtis (River Ridge) won’t be playing for a Louisiana state football championship.
Curtis lost in the Division I state semifinals to Archbishop Rummel (Metairie) 24-10 to end the title game run. Rummel now heads to the Mercedes Benz Superdome to play Catholic High (Baton Rouge) for its third state title in four years.
John Curtis, which bounced back from a 10-0 deficit to tie the score in the third quarter, finished its season at 8-3 with two of the three losses coming to Rummel.
The Patriots, who have won 26 state football championships in school history, played up in competition in the regular season and postseason based on a new rule adopted last February by the state association. Previously, teams were allowed to play up only in the postseason. Curtis was among five schools that opted to move up to 5A, although it is a 2A school.
