Westland John Glenn’s bowling team is on a roll — and it’s only early December.
On Saturday, the Rockets earned the first-place trophy at a 20-team tournament hosted by Drakeshire Lanes.
“The key was we made our spares and bowled well in the ninth and 10th frames,” said head coach Ron Staples.
John Glenn knocked down 4,191 pins to out-distance runner-up Clarkston (4,063).
The Rockets’ top five bowlers averaged a solid 199.
“This was a good test for us and I feel good about where we are right now,” said Staples. “We must keep working hard because our league is so good. We cannot rest on our accomplishments.”
The Rockets are coming off a 7-5 season in 2014-15. Among the team’s losses to graduation were state-qualifiers Nick Bell and Jake Priess, and all-conference performer Zack Croft.
Leading the pack of returners are Matt Essa, Damien Strochschein, Brian Martin, Kyle McCarthy and Jared Stevens.
Staples listed junior Ryan Brawdy and Michael Pizzuti as promising new-comers.
“This year, after losing four starters from last year’s team, we will have to rebuild and reload,” said Staples. “Our emphasis will always be ‘next man up’. Our team will consist of no seniors and little experience, and our league will always be tough from top to bottom.
“I have confidence that this team will be able to compete with anyone, but the lack of seniors will hurt us. I am excited to see where this team ends up at the end of the year.”
