Arielle Johnston of the Crisfield girls basketball team and Barry Gaines of the James M. Bennett boys basketball team are The Daily Times’ Athletes of the Week for Feb. 9-13.
Johnston, a junior, averaged 22 points a game in two wins for the Crabbers.
Crisfield head coach Greg Bozman said Johnston has played a major role in many wins this season as the Crabbers have continually improved over her three years on varsity.
“She’s the driving force behind the team,” he said. “Here ball-handling and scoring drives this team.”
Bozman added with her increased experience has allowed her to become a better player.
“I think she’s matured a lot. In the past, she was tentative but now she wants the ball in her hand,” Bozman said. “We all know how good she is in field hockey, but if she plays basketball all year long with summer ball and AAU, she can be a very special player. With how she’s playing now, I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
Gaines, a junior, scored 48 points in two games this week for the Clippers.
Clippers assistant coach Dustin Mills knows that Gaines has stepped up in the absence of some of his teammates.
“We lost some players on the roster and we needed Barry to step up,” Mill said. “We are extremely proud of his development and he will be one of the players teams will have to focus on when the playoffs come.”
Mills also believes Gaines is one to not rest on his laurels.
“He has a great work ethic and takes pride in his craft,” Mills said. “He is at the (YMCA) working hard to hone his skills in his off time.”
