Johnston’s T-Boy White tries to break a tackle during their Friday’s home game against Urbandale. White rushed for 100 yards on 15 carries, scoring two touchdowns in a 24-17 Dragons win. Johnston is now 3-0, with all victories coming by a touchdown or less.
Every goal-line stand followed by a 99-yard touchdown drive needs a nickname, right?
Johnston’s players will give it some thought.
The No. 9 Dragons beat rival No. 10 Urbandale 24-17 Friday in a Class 4A football game at Johnston, scoring with 1:16 left in the game to ice away a third straight win.
Johnston (3-0) led 17-10 but Urbandale had the ball at the Dragon 1-yard line late in the fourth quarter.
The defense kept the J-Hawks out of the end zone in front of a crowd of 4,850 at Johnston Stadium.
“We just had our backs to the wall,” linebacker Eric Siedenburg said.
Then it was the Johnston offense’s turn. The Dragons led 17-0 at halftime but sputtered in the second half, punting on all four of its previous second-half possessions.
“It was ugly,” Johnston coach Brian Woodley said. “Urbandale came out and kicked our tail.”

Urbandale was down 17-10 with a chance to score again. A fourth-down run was stopped by the Dragons.
From ugly to awesome.
Johnston rallied, getting two big third-down carries from Grant Gossling.
“We hadn’t gotten anything going for a while,” Gossling said. “We just said, ‘Let’s have fun and play the game.’ “
Gossling rushed for 107 yards, including a 49-yard scamper on the team’s final drive.
“I saw an open gap and just started running,” Gossling said.
Teammate T-Boy White ran for Johnston’s final 20 yards on the drive, including a 5-yard score.
Urbandale (1-2) scored with 4 seconds left on a 10-yard pass from George Reis to Gee Nayou.
The game ended after a failed onside kick, and then Johnston’s Woodley bobbed his head with joy to the song “Celebration” playing over the stadium’s speakers while his team cheered.
The Dragons scored on a 60-yard drive on their first possession. Gossling ran the last 18 yards for a touchdown with 8:56 left.
Johnston kicker Brady Jansen booted a 39-yard field goal on the team’s following drive. Jansen kicked a game-winning 52-yarder last week.
The Dragons added an 80-yard scoring drive on their next possession to make it 17-0. T Boy White ran 44 yards to the Urbandale 1, then ran for the touchdown on the next play.
