A gusty wind and wintry wind chills didn’t deliver a gloomy forecast for the Johnston football team’s offense Wednesday.
The Dragons attempted one pass but piled up a 35-0 halftime lead and beat Hoover 45-13 Wednesday in a Class 4A first-round football game at Johnston.
Johnston (8-2) compiled 311 yards of offense — all on the ground — and scored five rushing touchdowns in the game.
Wind? Never mind. Cold? Forget it. The weather never had a chance.
“It goes well with our offense,” offensive tackle Tom Dusen said.
T-Boy White ran for three scores and 86 yards and Grant Gossling added a touchdown and 102 yards. Two other runners had more than 35 yards.
“All of our running backs have something to offer,” Dusen said.
Hoover, which was aiming for its first-ever victory in the playoffs, ended the season at 6-4.
Johnston rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead with a strong running game and solid defense.
The Dragons rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. White ran for scores of 9, 14 and 2 yards. Gus Geneyan added a 4-yard scoring run.
Karl Rasmussen recovered a Hoover fumble for another touchdown, and the Dragons held their foes to minus-29 yards rushing before halftime.
“We wanted to give up no big plays and get the ball in our offense’s hands as much as possible,” Johnston cornerback Jeran Proctor said.
The Dragon offense scored on its first four possessions.
“We wanted to come out and put them down early,” Johnston coach Brian Woodley said. “Hoover’s a good team.”
The Huskies, who reached the playoffs for the second time in three seasons, trailed 45-0 before putting up 13 points in the final quarter.
Hoover quarterback Wilfrid Kouakou passed for 259 yards in the game and one touchdown. All-state receiver Dom Marschel caught seven passes for 151 yards.
Johnston advanced to Monday’s second round of the playoffs. The Dragons will seek another early advantage.
“I want to keep dominating,” Dusen said.
