Jonesboro’s Kollin Stone shrugged off a bad start against Paragould on Saturday and turned in a strong performance against the same Glen Sain GMC team Sunday.
Stone twirled eight strong innings, and the Ricemen advanced to the championship game of the Zone 2 District Tournament with a 10-2 victory over Paragould in the loser’s bracket final Sunday night at Cooper Park.
Top-seeded Jonesboro (28-11) will play No. 3 seed Blytheville in the first of two possible championship games at 4 p.m. Monday. Paragould sees its season end at 21-16.
Stone was touched for five runs in the first inning of Jonesboro’s 10-9, 16-inning victory over Paragould in Saturday’s winner’s bracket, but the right-hander from Riverside High School scattered eight hits and struck out four while allowing just one earned run.
Ty Gordon took the loss for Paragould, allowing six runs on 10 hits over six innings in the start.
Paragould’s Layne Ditto continued his strong tournament, going 3 for 4 against Jonesboro after driving in six runs against Mountain Home earlier in the day.
Paragould scored once in the first inning, but Jonesboro scored four in the first, highlighted by a two-run homer by Austin Bethune. Tyler Cole added a two-run single.
Jonesboro made it 5-1 in the second with Reed Fischbacher getting hit by a pitch and scoring on a double by Dillon Groves.
Ditto scored Paragould’s second run when he singled and came home on a double by Austin Shelton in the top of the sixth.
Nash Thomas got that run back for the Ricemen by slugging a line drive solo homer over left field in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2. Tucker Hydrick doubled home a run in the seventh to push the lead to 7-2.
Trey Hall drove in two runs with a single in the eighth to stretch the lead to 9-2, and JT Schwarz added another run with an RBI double for the Ricemen.
