In the days leading up to Friday’s Jordan Brand Classic, USA TODAY High School Sports will be publishing diaries from players to document their experiences in New York City, at practices and events related to the game. This installment is with Columbus (Ind.) North guard Ali Patberg, a Notre Dame signee.

It’s been a fun week so far and we had practice yesterday and today. We’ve gotten to walk to practice and go through the city and see all the people and all the traffic.

We went to Rockefeller Center last night and it was cool to see the view from the top of the building. We went to the 9/11 Memorial. It was really sad, but it was a good experience to get to see that.

It’s my first time in New York. It’s a lot of buildings, a lot of people and a lot of cars. It’s cool, but I don’t know if I could live here. It’s like 20 times the size of Indianapolis.

Practice has been good. Yesterday, we worked on moving the ball. We couldn’t dribble. We had to cut and get open that way. We want to play (Friday) as a team and not go out there and have it be a one-man game. A lot of us played in the McDonald’s All American Game. I was on the East team and we won and am on te East team again. The West players probably want revenge. It’s going to be competitive, but I want to win every time I step out there.

When you compare this to a playoff game in high school, that’s super intense and there’s a lot of pressure. There’s not as much pressure here and you can enjoy yourself and enjoy the experience. I want to take it all in, but I do want to win so it’s not all about the honor to play in the game.

To be playing in first game for girls, just the fact that we’ll be remembered as the first will be cool. We want to go out and show girls can play as well as the guys and that we belong. Girls deserve this game to show what we’ve got.

My roommate is Marina Mabry. We were together at the McDonald’s game and we’re going to Notre Dame together and we went on our officials together. It’s been good. We’ve gotten closer every trip.

I watched every game Notre Dame played in the tournament. I was upset when they lost. They stayed with UConn for the whole game and didn’t get over the hump. They could have played better. My goal, Marina’s goal and everyone else’s goal is to help them win a national championship.
