PORT EDWARDS – If you can’t locate Jared Joslin on the football field or basketball court, you aren’t paying attention.
The 6-foot-7, 225-pound Port Edwards senior is usually the biggest player on the field of competition wherever the Blackhawks go. He’s off to a great senior season on the hardwood, averaging 31 points per game and scoring a career high 38 in the season opener.
So what makes the big man in the middle difficult matchup for opposing team?
“His footwork is what people notice about him for his size,” Port Edwards coach Dave Gibbs said. “I got three calls from coaches this year telling my how impressed they were with his feet.
“Jared is incredibly coachable and he’s not satisfied. He always strives to get better. He’s pretty much the whole package and I don’t think he’s realized how good his is.”
What’s opening up on the court for you that you’re able to score like you are? Our guards are doing a great job running our offense and spreading the floor so me and my teammates get open for shots. The guards are doing a good job and penetrating and then dishing to me and I’ve been able to score for us.
What did winning a second straight CWC-10 title last year mean to the team? It meant a lot. Port Edwards hasn’t won a lot of conference titles in boys basketball and to win it two years in a row was a big deal for us and the program. It gave us a big boost of confidence.
Some talented seniors graduated from last year’s team. How have you been able to make up for that? The guys that are back have played together a long time and we have great chemistry. We’ve played with some of the younger guys too, so we’ve built up that chemistry with them as well. And our young guys are pretty good.
Is if fun to be the biggest kid on the field or basketball court? Most of the time it’s fun because I’m bigger than everyone else so I can create mismatches and kind of do what I want. Sometimes it’s hard though. I’m the one that most teams double and triple team so sometimes I get fouled more or hit by a couple kids in football.
What’s your biggest fear? Elevators. I always feel like I’m going to get stuck and I won’t be able to get out.
Name something on your bucket list that you absolutely, positively have to do: See the ocean. I don’t travel a lot, I’ve actually only been out of the state once, so seeing the ocean would be really cool to me. I don’t care if it’s the Pacific or Atlantic.
Tell me something that people would be surprised to know about you: I like watching nature. I like watching the squirrels and birds from our kitchen window where we have our feeders. It’s relaxing to watch them.
What athlete would you like have lunch with? Michael Jordan. I’d like to hear about all the hard work he put into basketball to become as successful as he was.
