We’re back, recapping some of the more noteworthy events of Day 2 of the July evaluation period, the first full day of the month during which coaches can watch prospective recruits.
Tom Crean turned up yesterday at Peach Jam, watching — among others — Bruce Brown. He then made the two-hour trek back from August to Atlanta, to watch Rawle Alkins.
Chuck Martin had already dropped in on Alkins at the beginning of the window.
As noted above, Crean was joined by Kentucky coach John Calipari, who is also prioritizing Alkins in the 2016 class.
A 6-5 guard, Alkins is the No. 18 overall player and the No. 4 shooting guard in his class, per the 247Sports Composite.
He spoke with Meyer after his game, and what he had to say will certainly make one of the coaches watching him Thursday feel good.
Alkins, 6-5, 210-pounds and out of New York City, will attend a yet to be determined prep school next year. He doesn’t have a formal school list, but he did have this to say when asked who was recruiting him the hardest.
“Calipari, Kentucky. He’s at all my games. If its not him, it’s Coach Barbee,” Alkins told 247Sports. “Louisville. Indiana, Chuck Martin and Coach Crean. North Carolina, Coach Williams and C.J. McGrath. Duke, John Scheyer. Basically all the big dogs.”
Alkins scored 24 points, and added 10 rebounds and six assists, in that particular game.
MAKER CONTINUES TO SHINE
We mentioned yesterday the rave reviews 2016 forward Thon Maker, a top IU target, was getting early at Under Armour All-American Camp.
That buzz continued into Thursday, so much so that Maker led the camp’s official daily recap, under the headline “Maker. Destroyer.”
Thon Maker’s dominant June has carried over into the Live Period. The 7-footer’s presence has been undeniable, and he has put together a stat line to show for it. Maker is averaging 20.7 points per game while leading the camp with 15.7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots per contest.
So far, Maker’s rebounding and block averages are tops among camps at the event, which is being held in Charlotte.
Was asked yesterday about IU’s standing with Maker at present. Things aren’t crystal clear since his move back to the 2016 class (or was it just a final decision to stay?), but it’s certainly fair to say Indiana will keep Maker on the front burner and at the top of their list of priorities.
>> Alkins’ NY Rens team will play for the adidas Gauntlet title tonight at North Gwinnett High School in suburban Atlanta. Braxton Blackwell, a 2016 wing/forward who holds an IU offer, will line up opposite Alkins, with his Atlanta Celtics team.
>> Per multiple reports, Crean made his way back to Peach Jam this morning.
This will be updated throughout the day.
