Last February, 10 central Wisconsin wrestlers won WIAA state titles.
It’s not an easy task to train, keep their weight in check and perform in the classroom while in pursuit of the goal of a championship.
Twenty-six wrestlers from central Wisconsin managed to keep their grades up and were named to The Crossface’s All-Scholastic team. Stratford’s Mason Kauffman earned the publication’s distinction of scholar-athlete of the year.
Kauffman was one of four Division 3 champions for Stratford. Kauffman was the 126-pound champion with a 49-0 record and maintained a 3.99 grade point average.
Teammates AJ Schoenfuss (106) and Jeremy Schoenherr (113) had identical 3.95 GPAs their freshman year and sophomore Cam Bornbach (182) has a 3.71 GPA.
The four Stratford wrestlers were the only ones to make the first team in either the freshman/sophomore or junior/senior division.
In the upperclassmen division, Edgar’s Wesley Dittman, Marshfield’s Josh Lang and Mitch Hertel and Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s August Peplinski were named to the second team.
Kolton Hanson of Medford, Stratford’s Tyson Kauffman and Witt-Birn’s Alex Peplinski made the second team among underclassmen.
The Crossface has a specific formula to come up with an overall point total for the student-athletes: Multiply a wrestler’s GPA by 100, then add the number of varsity wins, plus state tournament placement (60 points for first, 50 for second, down to sixth place) to the total.
