MILWAUKEE — The Kaukauna boys volleyball team is one step away from its first state championship in 33 years.
The top-ranked Ghosts dispatched of Brookfield East 3-1 early Saturday afternoon in a WIAA state semifinal at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Kaukauna (40-3) defeated the Spartans (19-9) by the scores of 25-16, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-16.
“They definitely knew this team, their strengths and weaknesses,” Kaukauna coach Tom Belling said of his team. “We played them twice. Split with them. They’re a darn good team, so we knew we had our hands full in this match. But we stuck to the game plan. They executed well at times and so did we.”
The Ghosts play Kettle Moraine, which defeated New Berlin United earlier today, in the championship later at 6 p.m. this evening.
Kaukauna is making its 20th state appearance and last won a state title in 1982.
“We’ll eat something, hang out with each other and enjoy this win for about an hour,” Belling said. “Then we’ll start our focus on the next one.”
