The Bishop Kearney girls basketball team needed to win its game Wednesday night at Geneva to earn the No. 1 seed in the Section V Class A1 Tournament.
Just arriving at the game was a challenge in itself.
The team’s school bus slid on an icy stretch of road and partially off of Route 14. None of the 10 players, three coaches, two team managers or the driver were injured, according to Kearney coach Kevan Sheppard.
An 18-wheeler and two other cars also went off that part of the road, Sheppard said.
“It was scary,” he said. “The biggest fear was if another vehicle slid into us.”
Since the passenger side of the bus was stuck in the snow at a tilt, Geneva officials dispatched a bus to pick up the Kearney team. Parents of the players took the team to the school after about a 30-minute wait, Sheppard said.
Bishop Kearney defeated Geneva, 61-46.
“The same bus took the kids home,” Kearney athletic director Chris Belmont said.
