Ohio State sophomore guard Kelsey Mitchell will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Reds game vs. the Cubs on Wednesday night, according to the Ohio State athletic department.
Mitchell will throw out the first pitch as the Reds host the Cubs at 6:10 p.m. at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday in a makeup game from April 25. (The Reds also play at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday).
Mitchell, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association 2015 National Freshman of the Year this past season, was the first freshman to lead the country in scoring at 24.9 points per game and she scored an Ohio State and Big Ten record 873 points.
Mitchell, the Associated Press Ohio Ms. Basketball in 2014 as a senior at Princeton High School, also made an NCAA single-season record 127 three-pointers while also shooting over 41 percent from the floor and over 83 percent from the foul line.
Mitchell was also named a first-team All-American by the United States Basketball Writers of America on March 31. She was just the fourth freshman to receive that award.
In addition to her scoring, Mitchell also got her teammates involved as she led the team with 146 assists. She accounted for 42.6 percent of the Buckeye offense which was the fifth-highest scoring offense in the country this season.
Mitchell was named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Year and named a second team All-American by the Associated Press. She was just the fifth Buckeye to earn first or second team AP All-America status in women’s basketball.
