Three consecutive state titles and a football program that is considered the gold standard in the state.
That’s what Kimberly head coach Steve Jones has helped oversee, including this season’s 14-0 mark which included an exhilarating 49-42 victory over Arrowhead in the WIAA Division 1 state championship on Nov. 19. The victory helped extend Kimberly’s win streak to 42 games.
Those impressive credentials helped garner Jones the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA)/Green Bay Packers Coach of the Year award on Tuesday.
“I’m proud of how our kids responded in an adverse situation (during the state championship game) with being down 21 points late in the third quarter,” Jones said in a press release. “For our kids to show the grit and determination to come back from a situation like that and win, I’m extremely proud to be a part of that.”
Jones, who teaches leadership at Kimberly, has resonated with his players and his community according to Kimberly running back Blair Mulholland.
Mulholland was recently named the Associated Press Player of the Year.
“Not only is he the best coach in the state, he’s one of the best teachers too,” Mulholland said. “He can really connect and relate to students from all different backgrounds. Jones is truly a great role model for everyone in Kimberly and it’s a better place because of him.”
Jones has a wife, Carrie, and a son, Cooper.
The Kimberly coaching staff includes assistants Dean Matsche, Pete Greeninger, Josh Heisler, Ryan Hinske, Mike Verstegen, Chris Biolo, Mike Chalupny, Jason Mangin, Aaron Hank, Matthew Hoh, Nic Peters, Jason Jochimsen, Ben Engelland, Jack Breese, Brad Hoerth, Ben Murphy, Mike Hardy and John Malin.
“This award is a great representation of our entire football program,” Jones said. “including the excellent coaching that that I get to work with and our outstanding players. It’s truly an honor for our entire program.”
In recognition of the honor, the Packers will award a $2,000 donation to the Kimberly football program. Jones will be presented with the award at the Packers home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 3 and honored on Jan. 31 at the WFCA All-State banquet in the Lambeau Field Atrium.
