SMYRNA — Tanner Owens breezed through the District 7-AAA golf tournament, finishing his round in just under four hours Monday at Smyrna Municipal Golf Course.
Then the Blackman High senior was forced to wait.
Owens won his second straight District 7-AAA championship, firing a 3-under 69. He beat Stewarts Creek sophomore Shelden Barina by two strokes. Owens and Barina were the only two golfers to shoot under par.
“It was a quick round,” said Owens, a Virginia Tech commitment. “The greens were pretty pure. We didn’t have to wait on anybody, so the pace was good. That benefited us a lot.”
That quickly changed behind him as slow play stalled the tournament, making it a six-hour day for the majority of the boys and girls field.
Stewarts Creek, a third-year school located in Smyrna, won its first district tournament, shooting a 310. Blackman was second with a 315 and Siegel finished third. All three teams advance to the Region 4-AAA tournament on Sept. 21 at Lakewood Golf & Country Club along with the top five individuals not on those teams.
Creek’s district title came a year after the Red Hawks won the Region 4-AAA tournament to advance to their first state tournament.
“We’re pretty proud of the honors,” Barina said. “We’ve got both (district and region) now. We’ve got some momentum now going into the region, defending it.”
Oakland’s Tate Chumley (76) and Adam Dyke (77), Smyrna’s Trae Balmer (78) and Riverdale’s Chase Clear (82) and Brennen Liehr (83) all advanced to the region as individuals.
Riverdale’s girls shot a 160 to win the District 7-AAA title. Oakland finished second with a 171 and Stewarts Creek finished third (178). All three teams reach the region. The remaining four girls golfers that competed in the district tournament advance to the region as individuals.
Riverdale senior Reagan Kinnie defended her district title, shooting a 75 to win by seven strokes over Oakland’s Jessie Eaton (82).
“It’s exciting, just because it’s senior year just to win this,” Kinnie said. “… There were a lot of starts and stops, especially with the boys in front of us.”
The region champion and top four finishers advance to the state tournament, which will be played Sept. 29-30 at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.
“I think if me and another teammate play well enough, we could advance,” Kinnie said. “We’ve tied with Coffee County before. They are our big competition.”
