HOUSTON – A Klein Forest High School student headed to his high school graduation died Saturday morning.

The student was on his way to NRG Stadium just after 7 a.m. when his car crashed near Main Street on the North Freeway.

Seniors were asked to arrive to the stadium by 7:30 in lieu of the 9 a.m. graduation ceremony, according to the school’s website.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the boy’s identity.

“Everyone is just kind of in a depressed state of mind because we never though it would happen to any of us,” said student Ashley Villanueva.

The student’s name was called during the ceremony; Klein ISD officials said that during the ceremony they were unaware of the accident.

“The Klein ISD family is grief stricken and wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the student,” the school officials said in a statement. “We are praying for the student’s family and the Klein Forest family as they begin to work through the healing from this great loss.”

A candlelight vigil will take place at the school Sunday night at 7. District officials said crisis counselors will be on hand.

“It’s really sad for what happened,” said Ariel Luna. “One minute everybody’s happy and the next minute something really hits you really hard.”
