There was a bit of a surprise on Thursday at Lakeland High, just days before the start of the season. Varsity coach Joe Knapp decided to resign “for personal reasons,” with the athletic department announcing that JV coach Bill Casey will move up and assume varsity coaching responsibilities.
I spoke to Knapp yesterday morning and also got in touch with Lakeland’s interim athletic director, Dan Belfi, who issued a brief statement. You can CLICK HERE to read my story that appeared in Friday’s paper.
The sudden decision definitely sent some shockwaves through Section 1, but everyone that I’ve talked to has spoken very highly of Casey. He’s familiar with the players and should be able to make a smooth transition. Knapp told me that both sides are open to the possibility of him returning to the program in the future.
