La Vergne’s Baylor Steelman gets congratulated by his teammates after scoring the first run in the sixth inning during a game against Blackman at Blackman on Thursday April 2, 2015.

La Vergne held off Blackman’s late rally Thursday night.

And in the process, the Wolverines put themselves in position for a big three-game series with Siegel next week with second place in District 7-AAA on the line.

La Vergne defeated Blackman 4-3 to win the three-game series and force a tie for second with Siegel. The Wolverines (8-8, 7-5 in 7-AAA) battle Siegel (11-6, 7-5) beginning Tuesday in Murfreesboro.

“Every series in this district is big,” La Vergne coach Dean Darnall said. “The fact we lost the first game (to Blackman) and came back to win the series says a lot about where we are.

“But we really don’t talk a lot about standings. We’re just kind of, ‘Win the next game we’re playing.'”

Siegel lost to Riverdale 9-2 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep by the Warriors.

La Vergne led from the opening inning on. But the Wolverines needed a two-run sixth off reliever Matt Harnish to put the game away.

Up 2-1, Baylor Steelman started the Wolverine rally with a single and later scored on an error. Dylan Blackwell walked. Courtesy runner Erick Jackson later scored on an error to give the Wolverines a 4-1 advantage.

“We had a misplay on a bunt,” Blackman coach Justin Entrekin said. “You could sense it building, but our guys showed some composure and Harnish battled his way out of the inning to minimize the inning.”

Those two runs were crucial as Blackman (8-9, 2-7) countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning off reliever Jake Hammon. Spencer Woods singled and reached third on pinch hitter Cole Brawley’s double. Austin Chessor’s sacrifice fly scored Woods.

Harnish then singled in pinch runner Stephen Smith.

But that was as close as the Blaze could get.

“I was a little anxious,” Hammon said. “But I know my guys behind me got my back. I know they are going to bust their tail to make every play possible.”

Michael Johnson (2-1) collected the win. Hammon, a Morehead State signee, picked up his third save. Blackman starter Austin Mabry took the loss.

Johnson gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead when he singled and later scored on Hammon’s single. The Wolverines added a run in the third when Hammon singled and then scored on a passed ball.

Blackman trimmed the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. Chessor singled off Johnson. Harnish then reached on an error forcing Darnall to bring in Hammon to close out the game.

Donnel Bailey flew out to right field to advance Chessor to third. D.J. Wright then singled him in.

But Hammon didn’t allow any more damage. He struck out Alex Finney and Chris Rodriguez to end the inning with runners on first and second.

Blackman had a prime scoring opportunity in the first when the Blaze loaded the bases with no outs. But Johnson struck out Bailey and Wright before getting Finney to ground out.
