Cotter’s Rebecca Martin hits against Alpena during the Lady Warriors’ three-set loss to the Lady Leopards on Tuesday night at Cotter Coliseum.

After falling quickly in the first two sets, Cotter put up a fight in the third, but eventually fell in three games to Alpena in 3A-North Conference volleyball action Tuesday night.

The Lady Warriors are still searching for their first victory after the Lady Leopards took a 25-11, 25-13, 26-24 victory at Cotter Coliseum, dropping Cotter to 0-4 on the season.

After Alpena coasted in the first two sets, the teams played a back-and forth final set, with three ties and four lead changes in just the first 13 points alone.

After Alpena took a 7-6 lead, the visitors appeared they might pull away for a third easy set victory, but after the Lady Leopards stretched their lead to 13-8, the Lady Warriors began to rally.

A kill by Aubrey Taylor brought Cotter within 14-11, and after an ace by Gracie Lance and a kill by Marie Reed, the Lady Warriors were within a point. Cotter rallied to within one point seven more times before finally pulling even at 22-22 on a hitting error by Alpena.

The errors began to pile up for the Lady Leopards as their fourth straight gave Cotter a 23-22 lead. Faith Grisham finally ended the Alpena skid with a kill to bring the score even again. Alpena scored the next point, but Cotter pulled even at 24-24 on a service error.

Amber Ray had a kill to force match point for Alpena, which finished the match with a hitting error by Cotter.

The Lady Warriors are back in action at 5 p.m. Thursday when they travel to Flippin for another 3A-North Conference matchup.

Cotter led the first set 4-2 before Alpena got going with four straight points. The Lady Leopards scored six straight with Grisham on serve, turning an 8-6 lead into a 14-6 advantage.

Cotter led as late as the 10-9 mark of the second set, but a 9-1 run with aces by Erica Fultz and Taylor Battenfield put Alpena in control.

Shawna Martin and Melissa Blasi led Cotter with eight digs apiece, while Rebecca Martin and Taylor added seven apiece, Lance and Samantha Hodges totaled four apiece and Reed added three.

Offensively, Shawna Martin slammed five kills, while Taylor added four, Hodges and Lance had three each, and Rebecca Martin served three aces.

Battenfield led Alpena with 11 digs, five kills and four aces, while Tatum King totaled five kills and three aces, and Grisham notched four digs and four kills.

Alpena won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 28-26, while Cotter posted its lone victory in the junior high match.

The Junior Lady Warriors defeated the Junior Lady Leopards 25-22, 11-25, 15-10.
