The Viola Lady Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Softball Tournament with a 12-2, five-inning victory over West Side Greers Ferry on Thursday at Armorel.
Viola (24-4) will face No. 3-seeded Jasper — a 7-4 upset winner over Kirby — at 10 a.m. today in the quarterfinal round.
Brittany Jackson reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lakynn Brown to put the Lady Longhorns on the board in the first inning, and Viola added two more in the third.
Amanda Martin homered with one out, and Brown walked and later scored on a double by Destiny Crawford to make it 3-0.
The Lady Longhorns scored three more in the fourth to make it 6-0. Mallory Guffey, Jackson and Martin all had hits and scored runs in the outburst. The Lady Eagles scored their two runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of Viola errors.
The Lady Longhorns put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Crawford, Hannah Braden, Taylor Batterton, Shaylee Harber, Guffey and Martin all scored runs for the 12-2 win.
Crawford struck out four and allowed just two hits over five innings in the circle.
