Plenty of changes took place in the off-season for Lakeland girls tennis, starting at the top with Chris Carlson taking over as head coach.
“I am taking over for coach (Sean) Beacome and he left a great program and I hope to continue moving this program in the way he had it progressing,” Carlson said. “He will be greatly missed and he laid a great framework for success for Lakeland tennis.”
The Eagles will also have some new looks on the court. Only four starters return, including Danielle Mattheison, who held down No. 1 singles last year.
“We lost some players from last year, but will have some sophomores step up and fill those roles,” Carlson said.
Co-captains Brooke Stewart and Natalie Becker will take on bigger roles this year and lead the way, with returnees Alyssa Salciccioli, Savannah Haley, Sydney Winter, Gina O’Neill and Nina Kirchner also looking to pick up the slack.
“We will have to work hard and be focused this year and not get discouraged,” Carlson said. “We will have to remember that our setbacks will not define us, but will only make us stronger.
“Our goal and motto this year is to have fun, improve and work as a team.”
Lakeland finished third in the division last year with Walled Lake Northern winning the KLAA North. On the other side of the conference, Grand Blanc finished second overall in the KLAA, tying powerhouse Novi and finishing behind only Northville.
