Lakeland ski will be represented at the state finals Feb. 23 at Boyne Highlands.
Brendan Morell qualified in both slalom and giant slalom as the boys placed fifth as a team at the regional Feb. 12 at Mt. Brighton.
Morell cracked the top 10 in both events, finishing 10th in slalom and eighth in giant slalom to move on.
The Eagles had a good first run in slalom, the morning run at the regional. However, Lakeland struggled in the second run and sat in sixth place. Brennan Mueller was 20th, Bryce Imhoff 30th and Nick Boyd 41st.
In giant slalom, Morell led in eighth, followed by Boyd in 19th, Mueller in 27th and Dillon Massey in 30th.
With Imhoff the only senior in the group, head coach Sue Wiberg is looking forward to big things.
“These boys are poised for an outstanding season next year and will be working very hard to qualify for the state final in 2016,” Wiberg said. “Congratulations to Brendan Morell.”
The Lakeland girls were ninth at the regional.
Leading in slalom were Taylor Simmons in 14th, Breanne Holton in 30th, Miranda Reinhard in 41st and Kelly Wagner 55th.
In giant slalom, Holton led in 19th, with Simmons 20th. Rounding out the scoring were Reinhart in 40th and Sarah Armstrong in 55th.
“The girls team has many new racers this year and they have come a long way since the beginning of the season,” Wiberg said. “I am proud of the way this team has improved and helped each other this year and know their hard work will payoff in the next couple of years for our younger members.
“We will greatly miss (seniors) Breanne and Taylor and the leadership they provided this young team and I am proud of how they conducted themselves on the race course and with the team.”
Lakeland competed at the KLAA Conference meet Feb. 9 at Mt. Brighton.
Skiing away from Alpine Valley brought new challenges, as the boys were fifth and the girls eighth.
Leading the boys in slalom were Morell in 15th, Massey next in 16th, Imhoff in 25th and Mueller 31st.
Massey, just a freshman, led the team in giant slalom in 20th. Morell was next in 21st, followed by Holton in 23rd and Nathan Hoyer in 31st.
Leading the girls in slalom were Simmons in 10th, Reinhart in 32nd, Holton in 39th and Ashley Wigton in 49th.
In giant slalom, Simmons was 19th, Holton 22nd, Wigton 34th and Reinhart 44th.
